Andrew Kuykendall – Las Vegas 242
A red car stands parked in front of the Holiday Motel, its neon sign buzzing faintly above, a swimming pool hidden just beyond the frame. In Las Vegas 242, Andrew Kuykendall captures the unmistakable 1960s aura of roadside America, where colour, architecture, and atmosphere combine into a cinematic still life.
Kuykendall’s background in painting informs the composition: the attention to geometry, the balance of form and emptiness, the way light flattens and deepens space at once. The image recalls the sensibility of Edward Hopper—had Hopper ever painted the California or Nevada desert, it might have carried this same quiet loneliness, this same strange mix of intimacy and distance.
With its saturated palette and suspended mood, Las Vegas 242 is both a document of a fading American vernacular and a painterly meditation on stillness, time, and place.
