Elvis Slept Here
Andrew Kuykendall – Elvis Slept Here, Normandie Motel
In this photograph, Kuykendall captures the flickering neon promise of a once-prominent motel—as stylised as folklore, as real as memory. The sign “Elvis Slept Here” looms large against night or dusk, its glow both boastful and wistful, a testament to how places sell legends. The motel, known as the Normandie Motel at 708 Las Vegas Boulevard South, adopted that slogan under owner Diane Hertz, who had the sign created by Betty Willis (famous for the “Welcome to Fabulous Las Vegas” sign).
Though the motel is now gone—demolished—it remains alive in this image, in the light of its sign, now preserved in part by the Neon Museum. Kuykendall’s photographer-painter eye makes more than visual record. He isolates the sign as symbol: of travel, aspiration, fame, and the roadside culture that once thrived between stops and motels and neon lights. In his frame, the legend isn’t just what is claimed—it’s what people believe.
