City Lights
Andrew Kuykendall – City Lights
In this work, Kuykendall frames a scene of uncertain calm: dramatic clouds hang heavy in the sky, while faint city lights flicker on the horizon. The city itself remains unnamed, a blur of glow and distance, leaving the viewer to wonder—is everything as it should be? Has something happened? Or is it simply the hush of a slow night?
As both photographer and painter, Kuykendall often moves within this space of ambiguity, using colour and composition to suggest narratives without resolving them. The deep blues and shadowed tones recall painter such as Mark Rothko, artists who used colour fields and nocturnal light to evoke solitude, mystery, and tension. Kuykendall translates that painterly sensibility into the language of photography, making the sky itself a protagonist.
What results is not merely a record of a night on the road, but an image suspended between realism and abstraction—where the darkness and the questions it provokes become the very subject of the work.
