Jan Stene

Jan Stene, born 1973, Sweden, studied Fine Art, Movie History and Ethnology at Stockholm University and Skövde College in the mid nineties. During this period Stene also worked at Bukowskis, Skövde Art Museum and The Royal Armoury. After his graduation he started his work as a curator in Malmö at The National Swedish Art Association. Jan Stene also regularly works as supervisor at Konstfack - The University for Arts, Crafts and Design, Stockholm Since landing in the Swedish capitol, 2000, Jan Stene has active working all over the world with Stockholm as his base. One of his first projects was Brändström & Stene. Through the years and with his influential Stene Projects he has introduced an impressive number of artists to the Scandinavian Art Scene, for example Cory Arcangel, Glen Rubsamen, Carmen Winant, Matthew Benedict, Sylvan Lionni, Luke Stettner and Letha Wilson. After a string of successful ventures in the commercial gallery sector (co-founder and previous co-owner owner of Market Art Fair, Stockholm and co-owner / founder C/O Stockholm) he founded Stene Projects in 2008, a gallery which represents progressive contemporary art, made by American and Scandinavian artists. The artists are represented worldwide and have been featured in exhibitions at MoMA, New York, Art Basel, The Armory Show, The Art Institute, Chicago, Venice Biennial and Documenta, Kassel to name a few. Stene explains that the gallery’s philosophy is inspired by the development of the computer software Linux: ´an open and moduled–based democratic space in a digital age´. The result of Stene Project´s vision is a community of artists that share an interest in slow artistic processes, attention to materiality, the dichotomy of analogue/digital and the historical/present. These artists make thought-provoking art reflecting the existential conditions of contemporary life.
